Setting your business category

How to set a business category and why it matters.

Updated over a week ago

When creating your ad account, you'll select a category that most closely describes your business from the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) list. Every business falls under a category on the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) list and you'll have a comprehensive list to choose from.

When your business category may change

When uploading your creative, you'll have the opportunity to change the business category to whatever your creative contains. Don't worry, the category you selected in your ad account will stay the same.

E.g. if your business is automotive but your ad focuses on interest rates, you'd change your business category and select "Credit" from special ad categories

Special ad categories

Special ad categories help prevent discrimination in advertising and are an important step in advertising with Roku.

If your ad mentions or promotes political, credit, housing, and/or employment, you’ll check all that apply when creating a new campaign.

Declaring a category ensures your ad will be served correctly and improves the likelihood your creative will pass the 2-3 day manual creative review

Why it's important to select special ad categories

If the correct category isn’t selected, you’ll need to revise your campaign and resubmit your creative for approval. This will add 2-3 business days of review time which could delay your campaign start date.

Targeting options may be affected

Depending on your special category selection, some targeting (e.g. income, age, gender, and zip-code) won't be available.

  • Political will not be able to target by income.

  • Credit, Housing, and Employment will not be able to target by income, age, gender, or zip-code.
