How to create SMS text messages for action ads

Updated over a week ago

Action ads bring interactivity to your streaming video ads, letting customers learn more about your brand, product, or service while your ad plays.

Action ads include a clickable overlay with a call to action (e.g., Buy Now, Learn More, Sign Up, etc.) that prompts users to grab their iconic Roku remote and "press OK." They’ll then receive a text message with more info from your brand.

One of the main benefits of an action ad is the ability to send a text to your streaming audience. Streamers can use their phones to further engage with your brand and take action, adding incremental value to your streaming ads.

After you add a creative and customize your overlay, it's time to create the text message copy to complete your action ad build.

Here's how to create an action ad SMS text message:

  1. Define the SMS message your audience will receive. Be clear and concise, making sure the audience knows why they should engage with this text from your brand. Less is more!

    1. Some things to keep in mind for the text message copy:

      1. Character limits: You'll have 236 characters to work with across your text copy and advertiser name. Consider using numerals instead of text to save space (i.e., 2 instead of two, or 4 instead of four).

      2. URL: The URL you enter will be replaced with a shortened URL beginning with https://go.roku. The preview will display the URL as "<shortened URL>".

      3. Note: This is a one-time, one-way text message sent by Roku on behalf of the advertiser.
