What is Genre Targeting?

Genre targeting allows advertisers to choose specific genres (i.e., drama, comedy, sports, news, etc.) that will show your ad to your target audience. You can also exclude specific genres and content ratings.

There are 12 different genres to include or exclude, as well as three content ratings (unrated, mature, and R-rated).

NOTE: Genre targeting is available only on Awareness campaigns. It is not available on Consideration or Conversion campaigns

When should I use genre targeting?

It’s generally considered best practice to leave genre targeting off. This allows Ads Manager to find your audience wherever they’re streaming -- that’s the best way to reach the most viewers.

That said, here are some examples of when deploying genre targeting can make sense:

  1. Excluding a genre that you may be favoring on other platforms. For example, if you’re buying lots of sports content from other partners, you may choose to remove that genre to reach viewers of different genres instead.

  2. Excluding unrated, mature, or R-rated content so your ads are not shown during more adult-centric content and environments.

  3. Selecting a subset of genres to ensure you’re aligning your ads with content patterns that make sense for your brand. For example, you may choose to run only in News, Sports, and Music genres. Or rather, you may choose to run only in Lifestyle, Drama, and Comedy genres.

NOTE: Genre targeting will be turned off as a default, helping Ads Manager find your audience wherever they may be streaming. If you're unsure which genres make sense for your brand, stick to automatic placements. You can change this at any time.

How do I apply genre targeting?

Follow these steps to apply genre targeting to your Awareness campaign:

  1. Click into your campaign and navigate to the Placement card. Click Edit to open a fly out.

  2. Scroll down to the Genre Placement section, which shows all 12 genres selected by default. From here, deselect any genres you would like to remove.

  3. Your changes will be saved automatically. Return to your campaign’s page to see your updated genre selections.
